Green EMAS with Runway Safe

Green EMAS (Engineered Material Arresting System) is a European first at the airport.

On Zurich’s runway 28-10, Green EMAS complies with the FAA’s new safety regulations for safety areas at the end of the runway (RESA). It ensures that overshooting aircraft are slowed down in a controlled manner when landing on the limited-length runway 28-10 at Zurich Airport. MISAPOR produced a special foam glass ballast in accordance with the specifications of Runway Safe, which forms the core of this system. The properties of the MISAPOR special EMAS ballast are not comparable with those of conventional MISAPOR ballast. The more than 4,000m3 of foam glass ballast had to meet strict specifications in terms of weight, grading curve and compressive strength in order to guarantee the desired absorption effect.

MISAPOR for Rockfall X from Geobrugg

The A9 at the Simplon was completely renovated. This included the comprehensive renovation of the galleries with their protection against natural hazards such as rockfall and avalanches. The new standard for the requirements for the structures regarding the impact energy to be absorbed is decisive here. Originally dimensioned at 300-500 kJ, the standards have become much stricter. Today, impact energies of up to 1,900 kJ must be absorbed after renovation.

For the first time, an even lighter and more damping-active MISAPOR was used in the Simplon gallery in Gabi: MISAPOR Greenlight. This improved the performance of the 2290 installed damping modules in two ways: MISAPOR Greenlight relieves the damping modules with 30% less weight and at the same time offers an improvement in the system’s “crumple zone” thanks to a longer absorption path. In the event of a rockfall, the forces are therefore absorbed even better and the structure is optimally protected. MISAPOR Greenlight has a specific weight of just 115 kg/m3 and is also used profitably in conventional lightweight fillings. Misapor has made a name for itself primarily with thermal insulation. But the environmentally friendly material also provides perfect sound insulation. On the Zurich-Basel railroad line in Frick, the all-rounder in front of a residential building absorbs the noise of passing trains and also cuts a fine figure as a tidy stone wall. With a height of just 120 cm and a width of 80 cm, the insulation is around 40 dB.
As is almost always the case with MISAPOR, the construction was quite simple. First, a standard concrete foundation was created for the steel mesh baskets. The anchored baskets were then filled in layers with MISAPOR Standard 10/75. The core was filled with cement mortar for additional stabilization and sound insulation.

Lay frost-proof pipes and save on excavation thanks to thermal insulation? Avoid heat loss in district heating pipes. MISAPOR has developed a simple system for this purpose.

Even a small covering of foam glass gravel is sufficient to protect pipes reliably against frost. With appropriate dimensioning, heat losses can be minimized so massively that even coated pipes can be dispensed with. MISAPOR also protects the pipes against rodent damage.

In its cement-bound application, MISAPOR foam glass gravel optimally fulfills the requirements for the construction of traffic areas. Earthworks in infrastructure and road construction

Lightweight construction with foam glass gravel is the modern solution for building on poor ground. MISAPOR sustainably relieves the load on the subsoil and forms a load-bearing layer for the superstructure. The mineral lightweight fill is also frost-resistant and highly draining – properties that reduce maintenance and save costs.

Widening and raising existing road embankments is problematic if the subsoil settles more strongly under the load of the new embankment. Settlement differences and entrainment settlements occur in the cross-section of the existing embankment, which can lead to changes in the transverse slope and longitudinal cracks in the superstructure. The use of foam glass gravel fill during widening and raising can reduce the base pressures and the resulting differential settlements as well as the entrainment settlements on the existing embankment (source: FGSV information sheet, 2016 edition).

Stably absorbing dynamic loads on poor subsoil – here too, the solution is MISAPOR. Mineral thermal insulation in building construction

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas in the ground. Even in high concentrations, the noble gas is odorless and invisible. According to the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH), radon and its decay products are the second most common cause (approx. 10%) of lung cancer*.

A radon concept with MISAPOR foam glass gravel is cost-effective to implement during the construction phase and foresighted planning pays off.
In addition to insulation and drainage, a MISAPOR foundation under the floor slab offers much more. If higher radon concentrations are detected during operation, the MISAPOR layer can simply be actively ventilated using a fan and exhaust air pipe, for example via the roof.

The cavity content in the fill and the closed-cell structure of the individual grains drain perfectly and quickly carry water away to the desired location.

Earth and gravel are heavy and often place an unnecessarily heavy load on retaining walls, ramps, concrete slabs or roof structures. MISAPOR is the ideal solution for greening even roof surfaces with low load-bearing capacity.

In principle, the lightweight substrate behaves like a mixture of earth and stone: thanks to its excellent compressive strength, it does not show any long-term subsidence. This means that MISAPOR can be used for planting, walking on and even driving on fillings on structures.
Weight can be successfully saved by partially replacing heavy substrate with lightweight MISAPOR.

Example: For 500 liters of organic soil mixed with 1m3 of MISAPOR, we obtain 1m3 of substrate, which offers a dry value that is approx. 500 to 600 kg/m3 lighter.

MISAPOR not only reduces the weight of the fill, but also ensures better soil aeration. With a pH value of 8-9, MISAPOR is suitable for green areas and has no influence on plant growth.
